FY 2006

Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Vietnam: $100,000 in continued support of a bilateral program to strengthen the teaching capacity of educational institutions in Lao PDR in the field of upland agriculture.

Center for Community Development Studies, China: $90,000 in support of the final phase of a project aimed at improving the livelihood of ethnic women and their families in poor, upland communities across China, Lao PDR and Vietnam by promoting off-farm diversification and market access for local embroidery.


FY 2005

Centre for Research and Development of Ethnomedicinal Plants, Hanoi, Vietnam: $99,660 in support of a project to introduce experimental models for marketing local products thereby increasing the income level of selected upland communities in the border areas of Vietnam, Lao PDR and Yunnan Province, China.

Centre for Sustainable Development in Mountainous Areas, Hanoi, Vietnam: $120,000 in support of a project aiming to strengthen agricultural and veterinary extension services in upland communities that border Vietnam, Lao PDR and Yunnan Province of China, in order to improve agricultural practices and enhance control of animal epidemics, especially Avian Flu.

Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand: $150,000 for use by its Faculty of Agriculture to develop, in collaboration with other institutions in the Greater Mekong Subregion, curriculum guidelines for interdisplinary short course programs in upland agriculture.

Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute, Can Tho City, Vietnam: $200,000 toward a collaborative effort among institutes in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam to transfer and apply new technologies to the development of crop varieties and to the improvement of farming practices that suit the specific ecological environment of upland areas in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Foundation-administered Project, USA: $48,000 for the costs of a consultant to provide assistance in the implementation of the Upland Communities in Transition component of the Foundation's Learning Across Boundaries area of work, in order to continue an integrated course of action for the Foundation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Hanoi Agriculture University, Hanoi, Vietnam: $149,000 for use by its Center for Agricultural Research and Ecological Studies (CARES), in collaboration with institutions in Vietnam and Lao PDR, to develop a transborder watershed management plan for the Nam Nern - Ca River basin across the two countries.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Lao PDR: $60,000 for use by its Department of Livestock and Fisheries to continue a collaborative effort to transfer and adapt fisheries development methods appropriate to upland areas from Thailand and Vietnam to Lao PDR.

Vietnamese Academy for Social Sciences, Hanoi, Vietnam: $73,340 For use by its Institute of Anthropology to undertake, in collaboration with institutes in Lao PDR, a study of coping mechanisms for seasonal food shortages of ethnic upland communities living across Vietnam and Lao PDR.

Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Yunnan, China: $100,000 toward the costs of developing new high-yielding, drought-tolerant aerobic rice varieties suitable to the specific uplands environment of the Yunnan Province of China, taking into account the socio-economic impacts of the increasing integration of regional markets.

 

FY 2004

Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge, Kunming, Yunan, China: $146,000 in support of a multidisciplinary research and learning mobile workshop focused on understanding and predicting land-use trends, in view of regional development plans, in the uplands of Yunnan Province in China, Lao PDR and Thailand.

Center for Sustainable Development in Mountainous Areas, Hanoi, Vietnam: $50,115 toward the costs of the IV Mainland Montane Southeast Asia Conference on the preservation of indigenous knowledge, natural resources and poverty reduction in the uplands of the Greater Mekong Sub-region, to be held in Sapa, Vietnam, May 2005.

Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand: $20,000 for use by its Unit for Social and Environmental Research, Faculty of Social Sciences, toward the costs of a benchmark study of water government in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Foundation-administered Project, USA: $48,000 toward the costs of exploring development by the Foundation's Southeast Asia Regional Program and its Food Security Theme of an integrated course of action for the Foundation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region of Southeast Asia.

Foundation-administered Project, USA: $83,836 for the costs of identifying and documenting successful intervention models in upland agricultural development in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand: $146,654 for use by its Office of International Agriculture toward the costs of programs to strengthen research and teaching capabilities of academic staff at Lao universities and promote networking and knowledge sharing among agricultural education institutes in Thailand and Lao PDR.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Lao PDR, Vientiane, Lao PDR: $45,000 to enhance agricultural productivity of upland farmers in central Lao PDR through a combination of community seed multiplication and integrated crop management interventions already employed successfully in northern Thailand and other parts of Lao PDR.

Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hanoi, Vietnam: $40,000 toward the costs of a regional conference on rice research and rice-based food security in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, to be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, October 2004.

Royal Project Foundation, Chiang Mai, Thailand: $20,000 toward the costs of its International Symposium on Sustainable Highland Development and Networking, to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, December 2004.

Sustainable Development eLearning Network, Eugene, United States: $50,000 in support of its project to develop and deploy a web-based resource to promote learning and sustainable agriculture in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen, Vietnam: $150,570 for the costs of a fellowship program oriented toward upland agriculture to enhance the academic capacity of selected teaching staff of agricultural colleges in Lao PDR.

Thangone Irrigation School, Vientiane, Lao PDR: $35,000 in support of its project to improve library services and produce Lao language textbooks and teaching aids for selected subjects relevant to rural development and irrigated agriculture in Lao PDR.

Vietnamese Academy for Social Sciences, Hanoi, Vietnam: $59,600 for use by its Institute of Anthropology for the costs of a study on the coping mechanisms of three upland ethnic groups in Vietnam regarding seasonal food shortages.

World Agroforestry Centre, Nairobi, Kenya: $310,000 for the costs of its research project on upland sustainable productivity in the Greater Mekong Sub-region through analysis of the physical, social, economic and policy environments prevailing in Lao PDR, Thailand, Vietnam and Yunnan Province, China.

 

FY 2003

Care Australia, Canberra, Australia: $31,360 for use by its Care in Myanmar project to map the food security situation in Myanmar through a review and analysis of relevant NGO experiences.

Center for Community Development Studies, Yunnan, China: $71,100 toward the costs of a project aimed at building the capacity of trans-boundary upland poor communities of China, Laos and Vietnam to improve their livelihood security by promoting market access and strengthening their marketing capability.

Centre for Research and Development of Ethnomedicinal Plants, Hanoi, Vietnam: $32,540 to support a feasibility study on strategies to increase incomes through the marketing of indigenous plant resources among the Dao upland communities in northern Vietnam.

Foundation-administered Project, United States: $50,000 toward the costs of exploring development by the Foundation's Southeast Asia Regional Program and its Food Security Theme of an integrated course of action for the Foundation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region of Southeast Asia.

Hanoi Agricultural University, Hanoi, Vietnam: $45,020 in support of its efforts to foster a collaborative process among Vietnamese institutions and enhance their research and training capacity in sustainable agricultural development and natural resource management in the upland communities.

Hanoi Agricultural University, Hanoi, Vietnam: $88,000 to assist organizations in Lao PDR and Vietnam in carrying out trans-border watershed management planning.

Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue City, Vietnam: $45,860 in support of its project to foster a collaborative process among Vietnamese institutions and enhance their research and training capacity in sustainable agricultural development and natural resource management in the upland communities.

Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand: $148,000 for use by its Faculty of Agriculture's Office of International Agriculture toward the costs of a training program for selected faculty members of Laotian agricultural teaching institutions.

Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand: $64,000 for use by its Faculty of Agricultural Production to enable agricultural organizations in Lao PDR, Vietnam and Thailand to collaborate in a feasibility study on the potential of upland fisheries development for mountainous poor communities in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Vientiane, Lao PDR: $40,000 for use by its National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute to explore adaptation and use of extension tools and material by poor farmers in upland communities in Northern Lao PDR.

Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hanoi, Vietnam: $50,000 for use by its Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development to conduct training programs for Ministry staff on data management, poverty mapping, rural poverty analysis and policy research methodologies.

National University of Lao, Vientiane, Lao PDR: $15,000 for use by its Faculty of Agriculture in developing, through workshops and study tours to China, Thailand and Vietnam, a suitable curriculum of upland agriculture for application in Lao PDR.

National University of Laos, Vientiane, Lao PDR: $85,000 for use by its Faculty of Agriculture to strengthen its teaching capacities in upland agriculture and improve laboratory facilities in consultation with experts form Thai universities.

Nong Lam University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: $42,730 in support of its project to foster a collaborative process among Vietnamese institutions and enhance their research and training capacity in sustainable agricultural development and natural resource management in the upland communities.

Tay Nguyen University, Daklak, Vietnam: $31,790 in support of its efforts to foster a collaborative process among Vietnamese institutions and enhance their research and training capacity in sustainable agricultural development and natural resource management in the upland communities.

Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen, Vietnam: $35,000 in support of its efforts to enhance teaching capacity of educational institutions in Lao PDR on sustainable agricultural development and natural resources management in the upland communities.

Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen, Vietnam: $34,600 in support of its project to foster a collaborative process among Vietnamese institutions and enhance their research and training capacity in sustainable agricultural development and natural resource management in the upland communities.

Thongone Irrigation Technician School, Vientiane, Lao PDR: $40,000 to produce local language textbooks for 33 different subjects relevant to rural development and irrigated agriculture in Lao PDR.

 

FY 2002

Foundation-administered Project, United States: $49,300 toward the costs of further diagnostic work on upland agriculture to support the Foundation's Food Security exploration in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Cambodia Development Resource Institute, Phnom Penh, Cambodia: $100,000 to support collaboration among research groups in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam in investigating the efficiency of marketing, internal agricultural trade and export in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, Cambodia, Lao DPR, Thailand and Vietnam.

Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue City, Vietnam: $31,000 to support the design and plan the development of a national network on upland natural resource management for sustainable development in Vietnam.
