The World in Painting: Contemporary Painting by leading Australian artists, October 5th - 30th , 2007 at Chiang Mai University Art Museum and November 30th - December 25th, 2007 at Chulalongkorn University’s Art Centre.

The Australian Embassy is proud to present The World in Painting, an exhibition of contemporary Australian art. From domestic interiors to dream-like landscapes, eight of Australia’s most distinguished artists present visions of their worlds on canvas that are at the same time highly unique and universally accessible. The exhibition will be on show at the Chiang Mai University Art Museum from 5 to 30 October and at Chulalongkorn University’s Art Centre from 30 November to 25 December.

Follow up Regional Policy Dialogue on "Transborder Migration Policy Implementation and Monitoring: Its Effectiveness and Current Policy Gaps in the Greater Mekong Subregion", 15-17 November, 2007, Khon Kaen, Thailand.

The Mekong Institute is organizing a three-day follow up regional policy on "Transborder Migration Policy Implementation and Monitoring: Its Effectiveness and Current Policy Gaps in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)”. The dialogue aims to provide updated status of policy implementation and monitoring mechanisms of the outcome of the first policy formulation meeting on “Transborder Migration in the Greater Mekong Subregion” in February 2006 at Khon Kaen, Thailand.

The overall objective of this workshop is to promote a better understanding among policy makers of the migration management within the GMS countries and examine gaps for subregional and bilateral policies to address the overall welfare of migrants in the GMS.

Cambodia's Ethnic Minorities: Voices of Women, 27 September 2007, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The Women's Media Centre of Cambodia will launch the six-part documentaries series on Cambodia's Ethnic Minorities: Voices of Women. Art on the Beach: the Mekong Art Camp 2007, Mu Koh Surin, Pang-Nga, Thailand by the Mekong Art and Culture Project, April 19 - 26, 2007.

The Mekong Art and Culture Project is a two-year collaboration of leading art institutes across Southeast Asia including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam. The aim is to expand and encourage the contemporary art and culture movement as well as develop valuable learning community based experiences within the region. The project has been supported by The Rockefeller Foundation, Southeast Asia Regional Office since August 2006.

Art on the Beach is one of the Mekong Art and Culture Projects undertaken by the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University with partners in Cambodia, Vietnam and Lao DPR. This art camp aims to strengthen relationships among partner institutes in the Mekong Sub-region, and to enhance art students’ creativity from learning outside their institute. The activity took place on April 19 – 26, 2007 at Mo Koh Surin, Pang-Nga Province, Thailand.

Exhibition: Creative Cambodia: Recycling Everyday Materials, January - March 2007, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Reyum, Institue of Arts and Culture, will open a new exhibition on "Creative Cambodia: Recycling everyday materials"on January 19, 2007. The exhibition will be held from January - March with the support of the Albert Kunstadter Family Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Prince Claus Fund.

Through photographs, video footage and the display of objects, this exhibition shows examples of how people in Cambodia make new use of everyday materials. By transforming available resources such as empty plastic and metal containers, second hand fabric, engines, and rubber tires, new tools and objects are crafted for use in daily life. The purpose of the exhibition is to describe and understand the process of generating the ideas more then to make a fetish of the objects themselves, thus emphasizing the ingenuity and resourcefulness within a living culture. International Conference: Critical Transitions in the Mekong Region, 29 -31 January 2007, Chiang Mai, Thailand.


The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand is organizing an International Conference titled “Critical Transitions in the Mekong Region” to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from January 29-31, 2007.

The international conference is based on critically exploring the Mekong Region from a social science perspective and is aimed to strengthen and encourage greater understanding of the region using social science approaches, theories and techniques. The conference aims to enhance understanding of the rapid changes in the Mekong Region in the context of development and poverty and to examine the interconnectivity of people, markets, poverty, and government policy, as well as social and economic transition. Also, the conference is designed to promote and foster dialogue among actors and stakeholders in the Mekong Region, in particular international donor agencies, academics, NGOs, business sector representatives and local peoples. The conference will provide a foundation for interaction, discussion and debate on issues affecting livelihoods of local people, along with the potential for further analysis linking micro and macro dimensions of development and poverty in the Mekong Region. Workshop to Disseminate Research Findings on Pro-Poor Tourism in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Yunnan Province of China on December 18 - 19, 2006, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The workshop includes presentation of case studies by research institutes from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Yunnan Province of China. Experts from the five countries, who have undertaken these studies during the past year, will present findings from their respective projects and case studies with funding from The Rockefeller Foundation. "The Untold Story" Performs in Cambodia; Phnom Pehn and Battambang, Cambodia; July 27 and 31, 2006.

The Untold Story is a mobile advocacy performance piece on gender and sexuality to raise impacts and develop awareness to the public. "Mong (Look)", a contemporary multi-media production decipting the world of cyber sex and information technology, is about a man who posts his sexy photos online for a woman he meets on the net to see --- finding himself a victim of a scam when these photos end up in sex websites. Southeast Asia Performing Art Symposium and Asiatopia Performance Art Festival, Bangkok, Thailand: The first Southeast Asia Performance Art Symposium; November 25 - 27, 2005. The Empower Foundation has received financial support from The Rockefeller Foundation to organize the Southeast Asia Performing Art Symposium and Asiatopia Performance Art Festival. Performance Art in Southeast Asia reveals unique characteristics. In most cases the art form has developed within the democratic and civil movement in each country. It is also rooted in historical factors and conditions which are related to local rituals, feudal systems, inter-continental trade, religious development and especially the influence of colonialism from the west.
